The BCI offers a wide range of memberships designed to enable people to join in the way that suits them best.

Statutory Membership

There are three grades of statutory membership; Fellow, Member and Specialist

Statutory members of the BCI have the right to vote in elections for Board Directors and on those issues which the Board may wish to put to the membership. They have the right to stand for election to the Board Fellows have the right to use the designatory letters FBCI, Members have the right to use the designatory letters MBCI, Specialists  have the right to use the designatory letters SBCI.

Non-Statutory Membership

There are four grades of Non-statutory membership; Companion, Associate, Affiliate and Student.

The Companion grade is open to managing directors, presidents, CEOs, senior directors and senior academics who wish to be associated with the BCI. Admittance to this grade is by invitation of the Board and on terms and conditions prescribed by the Board of Directors.

The Associates comprise persons who do not yet have the appropriate experience for Statutory Membership and any other persons or categories of persons who may be admitted to that grade by or on the authority of the Board. Associates have the right to use the designatory letters ABCI.

The Affiliates comprise persons who wish to be associated with the aims and objectives of the Institute and who are admitted to that grade on terms and conditions prescribed by the Board. This grade is open to members of other institutes and associations where both governing bodies have agreed that joint membership can be offered.

The Students comprise those persons who are undertaking a course of study, either full or part time, on a programme of any subject which leads to a qualification and who are admitted to the grade of Student on terms and conditions prescribed by the Board.

They shall have all the rights of Statutory Members including voting rights and be subject to all obligations of Statutory Members except the payment of an annual subscription. The designatory letters FBCI (Hon) and MBCI (Hon) will apply to these grades.

THE NEW SPECIALIST GRADE

The BCI`s number one aim is to ``increase membership worldwide, reflecting the interests of complementary disciplines as they relate to BCM.`` To fulfil this strategic objective the Board has approved the creation of a new Specialist grade which will carry the designatory letters SBCI

Entry Requirements

At least 4 certification standards and ability to demonstrate a minimum of two years full time practical experience working in their chosen discipline together with evidence of a recognised qualification in their specialist field.  Two references will also be required. The Specialist Grade will carry full voting rights.

Potential SBCI`s who cannot meet the minimum criteria will be invited to become Associate (ABCI) Members.

Faculties

The BCI will develop faculties for the following specialist areas to which Specialist will be elected: Crisis and Emergency Management, Human Resources, Information Security, Insurance, Physical Protection and Security, Property and Facilities Management, PR and Media Management, Risk Management, Salvage and Restoration, Technology Recovery

This new grade provides recognition currently unavailable to many professionals working in our industry. To others, SBCI will merely be a stepping stone to achieving Member and perhaps ultimately Fellow status. To facilitate this, the CPD and mentoring schemes will provide support and assistance individuals in their development. This new grade will also provide evidence to organisations that their BCM requirements are being progressed by respective subject experts who are professionally certified by the BCI.

INTRODUCTION

Business Continuity Management is defined as an holistic management process that identifies potential impacts that threaten an organisation and provides a framework for building resilience with the capability for an effective response that safeguards the interests of its key stakeholders, reputation and value creating activities.

Its primary objective is to allow the Executive to continue to manage their business under adverse conditions, by the introduction of appropriate resilience strategies, recovery objectives, business continuity and crisis management plans in collaboration with, or as a key component of, an integrated risk management initiative.

The ten subject areas listed below cover the competencies required by a professional practitioner in order to deliver effective Business Continuity Management. They are not presented in any particular order of importance or sequence.

SUBJECT AREA OVERVIEW

Initiation and Management

Establish the need for a Business Continuity Management (BCM) Process or Function, including resilience strategies, recovery objectives, business continuity and crisis management plans and including obtaining management support and organising and managing the formulation of the function or process either in collaboration with, or as a key component of, an integrated risk management initiative.

Business Impact Analysis

Identify the impacts resulting from disruptions and disaster scenarios that can affect the organisation and techniques that can be used to quantify and qualify such impacts. Identify time-critical functions, their recovery priorities, and inter-dependencies so that recovery time objectives can be set.

Risk Evaluation and Control

Determine the events and external surroundings that can adversely affect the organisation and its resources (facilities, technologies, etc.) with disruption as well as disaster, the damage such events can cause, and the controls needed to prevent or minimise the effects of potential loss. Provide cost-benefit analysis to justify investment in controls to mitigate risks.

Developing Business Continuity Management Strategies

Determine and guide the selection of possible business operating strategies for continuation of business within the recovery point objective and recovery time objective, while maintaining the organisation`s critical functions.

Emergency Response and Operations

Develop and implement procedures for response and stabilising the situation following an incident or event, including establishing and managing an Emergency Operations Centre to be used as a command centre during the emergency.

Developing and Implementing Business Continuity and Crisis Management Plans

Design, develop, and implement Business Continuity and Crisis Management Plans that provide continuity within the recovery time and recovery point objectives.

Awareness and Training Programmes

Prepare a programme to create and maintain corporate awareness and enhance the skills required to develop and implement the Business Continuity Management Programme or process and its supporting activities.

Maintaining and Exercising Business Continuity and Crisis Management Plans

Pre-plan and co-ordinate plan exercises, and evaluate and document plan exercise results. Develop processes to maintain the currency of continuity capabilities and the plan document in accordance with the organisation`s strategic direction. Verify that the Plan will prove effective by comparison with a suitable standard, and report results in a clear and concise manner.

Crisis Communications

Develop, co-ordinate, evaluate, and exercise plans to communicate with internal stakeholders (employees, corporate management, etc.), external stakeholders (customers, shareholders, vendors, suppliers, etc.) and the media (print, radio, television, Internet, etc.).

Co-ordination with External Agencies

Establish applicable procedures and policies for co-ordinating continuity and restoration activities with external agencies (local, state, national, emergency responders, defence, etc.) while ensuring compliance with applicable statutes or regulations.

Training is vital in ensuring that Business Continuity skills are developed and maintained within an organisation.  Even the largest organisations are rarely able to provide suitable training in-house and rely on a variety of training providers to fill this need.  This has led to a plethora of BC courses which may promote different views of the scope, content and vocabulary of the subject and be delivered to varying standards of presentation.  The BCI is frequently asked to recommend suitable courses but it has been unable to differentiate between the courses on offer in the absence of an assessment process.

The new BCI Training Endorsement Scheme has been introduced in response to the need for a quality standard for Business Continuity Training.   Its objectives are:

  • To ensure that students are presented with a consistent methodology across various BCI endorsed courses.
  • To demonstrate to potential students that the advertised course is delivered to a high standard of content and presentation

In creating a benchmark it is hoped that this will raise the overall standard of training across the industry.

The first providers in the UK have completed the scheme and are now able to provide BCI endorsed courses.  There has been considerable interest in the scheme from European training providers and a pilot scheme is underway to enable courses in the Pacific Rim to undergo the same assessment process.

The Scheme provides two levels of endorsement:

  • Listed - where the course content matches the BCI Certification Standards and GPG based on an review of course materials by a BCI assessor
  • Approved - as `listed` and, in addition, course delivery by the trainer has been evaluated by a BCI assessor attending all or part of the course

A handbook describing the operation of the scheme is available for download from the BCI website and training organisations are asked to look at this in the first instance before applying for endorsement.

A BCI supplied certificate of attendance will be issued to students by the training provider for `listed` and `approved` courses. Student`s BCI scored assessment points for attendance on an endorsed course will be higher than those with no BCI endorsement.  These points are counted in an assessment for the awarding of membership grades.

Students attending an `approved` course who are not already members of the BCI will be enrolled as BCI Affiliates for one year by the Training Promoter.  On receipt of the membership information from the BCI, the student can apply for a scored assessment (at the current fee) to upgrade to Associate ; if this is done within a month no further membership fee will be charged for that year.   Those who are already members of the BCI will be able to benefit from discounts offered by the Training Promoter.

CORPORATE PARTNERS

Corporate Partnership has been created for companies who wish to gain the membership benefits for their employees. This is not to be confused with Corporate Sponsorship.

Corporate Partnership provides:
