Synopsis

Eclipse Aviation Corporation (“Eclipse”) will certify the Eclipse 500 with a new fire extinguishing agent called the PhostrEx™ fire suppression agent. The PhostrEx™ agent, and its application in the Eclipse 500, have already won approval from the Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) and have passed all Federal Aviation Administration (“FAA”) certification fire testing. This new agent addresses many of the drawbacks of Halon fire suppression systems used extensively by the aerospace industry since the 1950’s. This paper describes the history of fire suppressants, the chemistry and toxicology behind the PhostrEx™ agent, and the methods that were used by Eclipse engineers to develop and certify this revolutionary technology.
