WHAT:
The Union County Chapter of the American Red Cross will partner with Union County 4-H to present to all local youth, ages 11-19, a series of three Disaster Preparedness Workshops. The first workshop will be held Monday, March 17, 2008. Youth are invited to come and learn about developing a family disaster plan and building a disaster survival kit. The second workshop, Thursday, April 10, covers fire safety in the home, smoke alarms, planning an escape route, fire drills, and fire survival. The final workshop, Tuesday, May 13, teaches youth what to do for weather related disasters such as thunder and lightening storms, tornados, hurricanes, and floods.
- The American Red Cross is committed to not only responding to help meet the needs of people affected by disaster, but also teaching people the skills they need to help keep their families safer in an emergency.
- Disaster preparedness shouldn’t be overwhelming or scary, nor is it expensive or time consuming. Families can prepare for a disaster by taking three simple actions: get a kit, make a plan, and be informed.
- To learn more about disaster preparedness visit a free online tutorial at redcross.org. Visitors will be learn more about each of the three preparedness steps (get a kit, make a plan, and be informed) and the site includes lots of helpful resources including downloadable tools.
All sessions will be held from 6 - 8 p.m. at the Union County Agricultural Center. For more information contact Laura Byrd, 4-H Agent, at 704.283.3740.
