The Territory's Deputy Chief Minister says the Government is doing its best to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour in Alice Springs.

Marion Scrymgour launched Alice Springs CCTV network at the town's civic centre today.

The cameras cover Todd Street and the Todd mall and will be monitored three days a week from tomorrow.

Ms Scrymgour says the Centre's problem's are getting as much attention as those in Top End.

"We are doing everything possible to deal with the issue of crime and anti-social behaviour," she says.

But the CLP believes the Government can do more.

Shadow Minister for Central Australia Matt Conlan says he's disgusted that the town's Uniting Church Op Shop has spent $12,000 - nearly half its yearly turnover - repairing windows smashed by vandals.

Mr Conlan is renewing calls for extra police to target the disintegration of law and order.

"We now have a Chief Minister who was police minister when Alice Springs was in a serious crisis point which was about 12 months ago. Doesn't look like a lot has changed. They apply a band-aid solution to the problem and here we are and the place is just about haemorrhaging. The people of Central Australia, I think they deserve better."

Hale says Darwin CCTV money is available

The member for the federal seat of Solomon says Darwin has funding for closed circuit television cameras but he hasn't set a date for their installation.

Damian Hale says the Government stands by an election commitment for CCTV cameras in Darwin at a cost of about $2.2 million.

He says the cameras will be most effective if the Territory Government funds continuous monitoring of the footage so police can respond to law and order issues as they occur.

He says the cameras could be installed at a number of locations including Darwin's nightclub strip on Mitchell Street, the northern suburbs and the Casuarina area.

"Our Territory lifestyle's been stripped away by antisocial behaviour and it's not good enough. You should be able to walk down Mitchell St, sit at a bus termianl, walk around town and enjoy yourself and enjoy the time with your family.

"To have this sort of thing going on is a nonsense and we're very committed to making sure it stops."
