Synopsis

Technology advancements are driven by demand. In the case of security integration technologies, the demand is often rooted in the need or desire to enhance effectiveness and lower costs.

When considering the role of security integration technology, it is important to get the maximum value from limited financial resources. But many integration opportunities can only be discovered by viewing the facility holistically. A broad look at facility infrastructure, systems, and practices in the context of desired outcomes provides the first glimpse of potential integration synergies.

Applications such as fire detection, emergency evacuation, surveillance, communications and networking cut across traditional system boundaries. These applications can be integrated at three levels by having a common user interface, a shared communications infrastructure and data sharing to create facility-wide applications.

Nearly every monitoring and control system in today’s facilities has its own unique workstation and user interface. Having all facility-related alarms and events consolidated into a single system can improve staff efficiency and enhance related applications such as work order management and remote monitoring services.

Many additional applications are enabled through security integration technologies. By broadening the systems view beyond security alone, a number of new integration applications emerge. Identifying opportunities for integration is dependent on a broad, holistic view of all systems within the facility.

In the end, any technology can be integrated given unlimited time and money. The application of security integration technologies results in a practical, responsible, and defendable security strategy.
