Biography
Mark Abkowitz holds an appointment as Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Vanderbilt University, and serves as Director of the Vanderbilt Center for Environmental Management Studies. He is also the Chairman of Visual Risk Technologies, a risk management-consulting firm serving manufacturers, transportation companies and government agencies.

Dr. Abkowitz specializes in the areas of risk management program development, risk assessment, hazardous materials transportation safety & security, and applications of advanced information technology. He is involved in education, research and product development.

Dr. Abkowitz has served on several national and international committees, including as Chairman of the National Academy of Sciences, Transportation Research Board Committee on Hazardous Materials Transport and as a member of the National Research Council, Committee on Disposal of Transuranic Waste at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant. He is currently a member of the Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board, having been appointed to this position by President George W. Bush in June 2002.

Dr. Abkowitz received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
