Synopsis
This paper discusses how Nessus Security Scanner and the Center for Internet Security (CIS) Benchmark Scoring Tool can be used to analyze and enhance the security of a Windows 2000 laptop. Nessus security scanner was used for the external assessment and the CIS benchmark security tool v.2.1.9 was used for the internal. The CIS tool was configured with NSA’s National Security Agency) Windows 2000 workstation (NSA_win2k_ workstation.inf) security template. The utilities were used to conduct a before and after lockdown analysis. The lockdown procedures are described in detail including an analysis of the NSA template to cover all lockdowns applied. Appendix A contains the initial Nessus test results and Appendix B contains the final CIS benchmark security tool Scan log.
