Synopsis
September 11, 2001 ushered in a new era for Emergency Response. There is now a paramount need for businesses, schools and individuals to be prepared to execute an “Emergency Lockdown” (or “Shelter in Place”). The first objective of this article is to assist an organization with the development of an Emergency Lockdown plan. In addition to general Emergency Lockdown procedures, the article identifies special procedures that are peculiar to the type of disaster and also notes important site-specific factors that must be taken into account. Finally the article addresses the education, training and exercising activities that will make the plan effective in an actual emergency situation.
