The state-federal plan to suspend operations at nine Disaster Recovery Centers for 48 hours due to the approach of Tropical Storm Hanna has been cancelled.

Recovery officials said new storm projections provide a clearer picture of the storm's lessened threat to Central and Southeast Florida where the recovery centers are now open.

FEMA and the state will continue to monitor the situation and may reassess the situation as conditions warrant.

Each center is staffed with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), State Emergency Response Team (SERT) disaster recovery specialists and representatives from voluntary agencies. They are ready to help survivors through the process of applying for disaster assistance.

Applicants may still register by calling FEMA toll-free 800-621-FEMA (3362). Those with a speech or hearing impairment may call TTY 800-462-7585 and apply. Multilingual operators are available. The toll-free telephone numbers will operate 7 a.m. to midnight daily until further notice. Application for disaster assistance can also be made by registering online at www.fema.gov.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
