
The Yom River burst its banks, causing flood damage to an estimated 3,000 households and 28,000 rai of rice fields in Sukhothai’s Kong Krailat district.
Although the floodwaters have receded in most parts of the North, several areas continued to suffer heavy damage. In Sukhothai, 10 to 20 centimeter high floodwaters rose near the Yom River and Klong Photi and Bang Kaew intersections.
The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department yesterday reported that the death toll had reached 79 with 37 people still missing.
Between May 22 and 31, Uttaradit recorded 67 deaths and 36 missing. The numbers make it the region to have suffered the highest number of losses as a result of the recent severe flooding.
The disaster has caused more than 256 million baht in damages according to preliminary figures released by government officials.
Warnings remain in effect for the northern provinces as well as parts of the Northeast. Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Uthai Thani, Phetchabun, Nong Kai and Khon Kaen have been advised to prepare for flash flooding and mudslides due to possible heavy rain until June 4.
