Region 8 Observes National Disaster Consciousness Month

PCSupt Eliseo dela Paz, the chairman of the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council in Eastern Visayas announced that as per Presidential Executive Order No. 137 dated August 10, 1999 declaring the month of July every year as a National Disaster Consciousness Month, the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council will conduct a motorcade on July 5, 2006 as a jump off event for the month-long series of activities.

General dela Paz said that before the Motorcade, a Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered at 7:00 o`clock in the morning at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel at Camp Ruperto Kangleon, Palo, Leyte. The Assembly area for the motorcade will be at the PRO 8 Quadrangle at Camp Ruperto Kangleon.

Among the activities in line are the distribution of flyers and brochures on disaster preparedness at the PIA Display Center and at the OCD Library, the display of streamers and Posters at the government offices, schools, hospitals and business establishments, seminar workshop on disaster preparedness, geohazard mapping and community flood forecasting at the Ritz Tower de Leyte in Tacloban City and at the Sabin Hotel in Ormoc City.

Other activities include information drives on disaster preparedness, earthquake fire drill and evacuation drill with ICS and MCI management, dock ship bombing, Fire Drill with Multi Sectoral simulated shipwreck Rescue and Triage.

General dela Paz also disclosed that a disaster management and contingency planning workshop will be conducted at the municipality of Barugo, Leyte and at Ampil Pension House in Maasin City.

The Department of Education Regional Office 8 will sponsor a Poster Making and Essay Writing Contests while a community based disaster management training will be conducted at Bontoc Municipal Hall in Bontoc, Southern Leyte.

For Samar, a disaster management and contingency planning workshop and earthquake and fire drill will be conducted at Giporlos Conference hall, Giporlos, Eastern Samar.
