G1 Satellite Launch Marks Significant Milestone For North American Mobile Digital Television Services
The Mobile DTV Alliance announced today that member company ICO Global Communications (Holdings) Limited (NASDAQ: ICOG) has advanced mobile digital TV in North America to the next level with the launch this week of its ICO G1 satellite, designed specifically to deliver mobile applications. The satellite launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Monday, April 14. The satellite launch, supported in part with contributions from three other MDTVA members, makes ICO North America’s first operational Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) provider in the S-band.
Market trials for the ICO Mobile Interactive Media (ICO mim™) service will be conducted in Las Vegas and Raleigh-Durham, N.C., starting later this summer. NBC Universal will provide content for the trials.
“This week’s launch pushes the mobile DTV industry closer to the reality of a nationwide mobile TV service network,” said Walt Tamminen, president of the MDTVA. “Our focus is to promote mobile DTV development and create an ecosystem to support that development. It’s exciting to see ICO tap into the MDTVA ecosystem to take this pioneering step.”
MDTVA member companies Alcatel-Lucent, Harris Corporation and DiBcom, are part of the ecosystem of suppliers and vendors ICO assembled for ICO G1.
“ICO G1 is a major step in establishing ICO as America’s first nationwide mobile interactive media company,” said Tim Bryan, chief executive officer of ICO. “In addition to high-quality, live TV content, we will provide interactive navigation and nationwide roadside assistance to our customers. While our initial ICO mim service will be delivered through existing video displays like in-vehicle screens and laptops, the service will migrate to consumer electronics, like mobile phones.”
The satellite-based ICO mim service combines satellite technology with ground-based networks, improving the consumer experience and providing national coverage, Bryan said. The hybrid approach ensures uninterrupted nationwide coverage.
