Synopsis

This document describes the basic concepts of how the EarthWhere™ Spatial Data Provisioning application from SANZ, Inc. can enhance ESRI ArcGIS environments. This document provides two specific methods for system architects and application developers to optimize the usage of raster imagery in ArcSDE and ArcIMS implementations. The first method details how EarthWhere can rapidly provision imagery from an archive of source imagery into an optimized format for ArcSDE. This discussion concentrates on defining the optimal spatial resolution and image parameters to meet the exact requirements of the end user. The second method is based on the integration of EarthWhere with ArcIMS to facilitate the delivery of custom image datasets derived directly from source data to end- sers. Specific examples and detailed processes are included within to demonstrate these concepts. EarthWhere is an enterprise software application designed to meet the challenges of managing and disseminating geospatial imagery. Designed to manage imagery regardless of the media, location or format, EarthWhere rapidly creates custom datasets based on the unique requirements of each end user. Using an easy to implement API, the application can be extended to support a wide variety of third party applications or can be customized to rapidly process large volumes of data to exact user specifications for system-wide implementation. These custom applications utilize EarthWhere as a provisioning engine and form the basis for the integration efforts described in this document. The examples within the document concentrate predominately with ortho-imagery since this is the most prevalent type of imagery within GIS applications. The processes and examples outlined apply to a wide variety of remote sensing data sources including digital elevation models (DEM), hyperspectral imagery and LIDAR.
