AMES, Iowa Ames is in the running for a 500 (m) million dollar facility that would test foreign animal diseases.
A group led by Iowa State University submitted an application to the U-S Department of Homeland Security that could make Ames the new home for a new national bio- and agro-defense facility. The facility would house between 300 and 400 researchers, scientists and technicians along with support staff.
Ames is one of 29 sites across the country that is vying for the new facility. Other states, including Missouri, Wisconsin and Kansas, have also submitted bids.
Finalists are expected to be announced in September. A site could be chosen by the end of the year.
