GE Security, Inc., a business of GE Enterprise Solutions (NYSE:GE) and Moscow International Airport Domodedovo has announced GE’s Homeland Protection business has been chosen to provide two integrated advanced technology CTX 9000 DSi/XRD 3500 system-of-systems explosives detection solutions to the airport. The systems are planned for commercial operation at the beginning of next year and are expected to be the first of their kind anywhere.

Integration of computed tomography (CT) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) into one checked bag screening system-of-systems can dramatically reduce false alarm rates, enhancing security and driving down operational costs. The combined CTX 9000/XRD 3500 systems will compliment Domodedovo’s security management practices, helping Russia’s fastest growing airport better serve its 19 million annual passenger volume by improving the quality and efficiency of checked baggage screening.

“Passenger security is of paramount importance to Domodedovo Airport and the continuous efforts of Domodedovo Aviation Security, a dedicated business within EAST LINE Group, the airport management company, have been focused on its sustained development. We believe that through implementing GE’s innovative ‘system of systems’ we will achieve significantly higher throughput to better support our ever increasing passenger traffic,” said Daria Korshunova, director public relations, Moscow International Airport Domodedovo. “We take special pride in being the first airport in the world to adopt this cutting-edge technology and we regard it as a practical demonstration of our attitude towards passenger security.”

“GE Security is pleased Moscow International Airport Domodedovo has chosen to become our launch customer for the innovative CTX 9000/XRD 3500 system-of-systems,' said Dennis Cooke, president and CEO, GE Security's Homeland Protection business. “Domodedovo leads a growing trend in Russia, and around the world, to using GE Security advanced technologies to help improve the effectiveness and efficiency of security while maintaining passenger satisfaction.”

Recognized as industry leading solutions in their own rights, the CTX 9000 and XRD 3500, when paired in a system of systems solution, offer an unparalleled level of performance and throughput for high-volume airport applications.

The XRD 3500 explosives detection system is based on coherent X-ray scatter (CXRS), which uses molecular composition to identify threat materials. The XRD 3500 system uses alarm location data, acquired from bag images collected by the CTX 9000, positioned earlier in the baggage handling system (BHS), to focus on areas of bags that have been identified as suspicious in the previous screening step. This ability to focus on a limited threat area without depending on operators and other time-consuming procedures greatly increases the throughput of the XRD system. This can result in a significant increase in overall detection rates and reductions in processing times and operating costs.

The TSA-certified GE CTX 9000 is designed to integrate with the baggage handling system and can be a compelling choice for fast-paced airport environments. It is the highest operational throughput explosives detection system designed for integration and its meter-wide conveyor belt and large tunnel opening can accommodate large and standard-size bags.

Moscow International Airport Domodedovo (DME) is the largest in Russia and the leader in passenger traffic among the Moscow airports. In 2007, passenger traffic was 18,755,098, a 22% increase over 2006. To date, there are over 75 airlines operating scheduled flights from DME to more than 220 destinations worldwide, of which flights to 105 destinations are only available from Domodedovo. Investments totaling USD 280 million are planned for the airport complex in 2008. For several months in 2006 and 2007, Domodedovo achieved the top Airport Council International rating as the most dynamically developing group two airport. DME has also received the ‘Highly Commended’ award from OAG Airport Marketing Awards as well as numerous other prestigious industry awards.
