With reports of South East Asia accounting for 85 percent of world wide deaths due to natural disasters, the need for overcoming the consequences of such disasters has seen effective attempts being made.

Apart from the biggest ever ASEAN Regional Disaster Emergency Response Simulation Exercise, raising public awareness has also been part of the effort. To a certain extent, these various activities have effectively contributed to the blossoming of the ASEAN community.

According to Secretary General Ong Keng Yong, "Disaster risk reduction is increasingly becoming a major global concern that can only be effectively addressed by co-ordinate action at the national, regional and global level."

Synopsis
Risk communication principles which have been used in a variety of public warning systems including those addressing severe weather, infectious diseases, and hazardous materials, can be helpful in determining information to provide to the public regarding terrorist threats. These principles suggest that public warnings should include information on the nature and location of threats, threat time frames, and guidance on actions the public should take.
