Editorial

“Prevention is better than cure.” Technology enables us to do exactly this when we are faced with a man made emergency situation.

The S3 system, developed by IBM's T.J. Watson Research Center uses analytic tools to index digital video recordings and then issue real-time alerts when certain patterns are detected. This system will be installed for the Beijing Olympic Games, where it will scan video images of city streets to prevent any disorder caused by any unusual behaviour.

To enhance security, Fidelica Microsystems, Inc., announces the availability of the company's FSC-3012 Biometrically Authenticated Smart Card. This card provides exceptional accuracy, flexibility and cost-effectiveness.

Featured White Paper
Title Beyond Desktop GIS
Author Max J. Egenhofer, Werner Kuhn
Company Intelligent Spatial Technologies, Inc.
Synopsis
The portable spatial information technologies sketched in this paper do not yet exist. While they may sound like fiction, they are realistic goals for the next 5-10 years. In order to make them reality, however, two types of advancements are needed. First, technological advances: they include improved quality of displays of hand-held devices, more stable and higher-bandwidth wireless communication, and low-cost GPS and gyroscope cards. The second area in need of advancement is know-how.
