Disaster warning systems are being developed as a requisite in order to save lives.
The Indian Ocean tsunami on December 26, 2004 was the deadliest tsunami in recorded history. The catastrophe led UNESCO to call for a global tsunami monitoring system. The Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System became active in late June 2006.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, however, was established as far back as 1949, after the 1946 Aleutian Island earthquake. It was the PTWC that issued a Tsunami bulletin 12 minutes after the July 2006 Java earthquake alerting Indonesia and Australia to a possible local tsunami. At least 23,000 people were evacuated from the coastlines, as a result.
