Since the end of 1980s, XJ communication undertakings have achieved many historical firsts.  In 1987,the 1st stored program controlled electronic telephone switching system in Urumqi City was put into use.In 1991,the 1st optical cable was set up between Urumqi and Turpan.In 1993,the first mobile phone appeared in XJ.And in 1996,XJ telecom departments firstly provided internet service.)

In 2007, over 15 mln among 20 mln population in XJ were phone subscribers.73 among per 100 people used telephones. Every administrative village had got access to telephone

The popularization rates of fixed-line phone and mobile phone are both above the national average level.

The rapid development of communication undertakings brings prosperity to information trade and high efficiency of social undertakings.The e-government service becomes the bridge linking the people, the Party and government organs. The industrial informationalization saves enterprises' cost and improves production efficiency. The project of village getting access to phone makes farmers know more about the outside world, and the farm produces also see big market.

In order to satisfy the communication demand of ethnic minority people in XJ, this year, China Mobile XJ Branch developed handset newspapers in Uygur language that can provide news in and out of XJ, as well as weather forecast and other formation.

Up to now, the total number of XJ mobile phone subscribers has topped over 8 mln, increasing by nearly 40 times.The network capacity tops 10 mln.
