An all-terrain vehicle built by Columbus Industries in Fulton County will be aiding Homeland Security. The state's Opportunity Returns program has earmarked $150,000 to upgrade the machine called COOT2.
Currently, Illinois State Police Tactical Response Teams and U.S. Border Patrol officers use the machine. The money will pay for the Fairview-based company to add diesel and remote-controlled technology to the vehicle.
"We are going to put in a line of sight remote controlled system, as well as one that will run over the Internet and the satellites, “ Columbus Industries President Dave Donaldson said. “And, they will run the same way they do the drones for the Army."
The COOT2 costs about $12,500. Its biggest asset is its center rotation that allows it to keep all four wheels on the ground. Source |
