Synopsis

Public concerns over perceived health risks pose unique communication challenges. Simply stated, when communicating in emotionally charged, high stress, or high concern situations, the rules of communication change. When such a high concern situation exists, traditional methods seldom substitute for the rigorous application of risk communication principles. This article is offered to guide the user briefly through some basic principles of risk communication, and to provide useful guidelines and tools for effectively applying the risk communication principles when addressing public concerns associated with nuclear, chemical or biological weapons.
