Synopsis

The paper industry’s strategy to eliminate dioxin from mill waste water includes the substitution of chorine dioxide for chlorine in the first stage of chemical pulp bleaching. However, while dioxin discharges have been significantly reduced, the potential for a chlorine dioxide spill can pose a serious threat to both paper mill employees and the local population. In this case study, a major North American paper company reduces this threat by installing a new vapor-suppressing foam system.
