Synopsis
The 2002 National Fire Alarm Code (NFPA 72) has introduced a new audible signaling requirement for optional use on fire alarms systems. The new requirement is used with a signaling method called “narrow band signaling”. With this signaling method, dB requirements are based on octave band (or 1/3 octave band) measurements instead of dBA measurements. The alarm signal must exceed the ambient noise (adjusted for masking affects) by a specified amount in at least one octave band. The new narrow band method can be used in lieu of the conventional dBA method.
