Synopsis
Language is a dynamic, ever-changing tool and central to everything we do and are. The certification organizations in the Business Continuity industry make attempts to codify how we use language and define terms, and that’s laudable. However, terminology evolves through common sense and common usage, and the real movers and shakers in this regard are industry practitioners. Practitioners need to keep talking about how they use terms, and this paper attempts to open a dialogue among industry practitioners to foster agreement upon at least the more basic terminology as it relates to the latest industry concepts.

Contingency Planning has expanded and continues to expand from just Disaster Recovery into the larger scope of Crisis Management and even beyond that into all of problem management. This expansion of concept and responsibility within the Contingency Planning industry is due to have a profound impact on the visibility and importance of business continuity planning to senior managers even beyond the growing need for continuous availability. It’s more than a technical issue, and awareness of that as practitioners internal to the industry will result in enormous industry growth and opportunity in years to come.
