The increased use of imagery and other raster datasets for GIS systems presents unique challenges to the traditional IT (Information Technology) infrastructure and to end users. Combine increasing image resolution with increasing demand for near real time applications using imagery, and it is easy to see why organizations are being forced to consider newer, more cost efficient solutions in managing these datasets. Technology such as on-demand spatial data provisioning found in EarthWhere ™ is being implemented to produce custom datasets from an archive of source imagery on-demand. Coupled with storage solutions optimized for geospatial data, these new technologies are enabling imagery assets to be leveraged for more users by lowering cost, increasing flexibility and streamlining processes. This paper describes the challenges with the management and dissemination of geospatial imagery and offers solutions based on unique combinations of technologies and updated processes.
