Synopsis

Next to trained personnel, data is an organization’s most irreplaceable asset. Other aspects of information technology and infrastructure, such as networks, systems and end user facilities, avail themselves of recovery strategies based either on replacement or redundancy. In many disasters, these technology and infrastructure components have been effectively replaced “on-the-fly” and without advanced logistical planning at all. In the case of data, however, the only way to ensure continuity is to make a copy. Data cannot be replaced; it can only be made redundant.

This paper looks typical approaches to data protection and evolving strategies for safeguarding this key component of successful business disaster recovery.

At a time when successful recovery is increasingly defined in terms of “the successful restoration of access to a valid copy of data,” data protection has become synonymous with business continuity. “Time to data” is the metric by which plans must be judged to determine their efficacy.
