The Red Cross has created a new disaster management plan after the success of a program that was established during the Mackay floods earlier this year.

More than 4,000 homes were damaged when about 600 millimetres of rain fell in about four hours in February.

During the recovery process, the Red Cross found that many Indigenous and South Sea Island residents were not seeking help, and then worked with local groups to target affected families.

Katie Greenwood from the Red Cross says the model that has been developed would work well in any disaster area.

"I think that's the real benefit that we found in working with this model and we've certainly documented it and worked with the local community services to documented it as well, and you can pick it up and place it then in the centre of any community recovery after a disaster," she said.
