About a dozen people visited the temporary Disaster Recovery Center set up Monday at the Martin County Fairgrounds by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, an agency spokeswoman said.

The recovery center in Building G at 2616 S.E. Federal Highway also will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday.

Homeowners, business owners and renters who suffered damages or losses as a result of Tropical Storm Fay should consider visiting the center and talking with recovery specialists about what assistance may be available, said Renee Bafalis, a FEMA spokeswoman.

The first step is to register with FEMA by calling (800) 621-FEMA (3362) or going online at www.fema.gov.

So far, 105 people in Martin County have registered, Bafalis said.

People who have already registered can go to the recovery center to learn the status of their claim and ask questions, Bafalis said.

Martin County residents also can visit the Disaster Recovery Center in St. Lucie County at 3855 S. U.S. 1, Fort Pierce. No closing date has been set for that recovery center, Bafalis said.
