A four-seater Cessna 172 plane crashed Saturday in a wooded area near 6757 Three Notch Road in Catoosa County.
The pilot, Jim Sherwood of Hixson, Tenn., took off from a nearby runway. He was flying to Dayton, Tenn., and began experiencing problems shortly after takeoff from a runway on Old Three Notch Road.
Sherwood, an experienced ex-military aviator, was the only person in the plane, which is believed to have experienced an engine problem. Fort Oglethorpe and Catoosa County rescue crews responded to the crash about 11:30 a.m. and found a pilot who was alert.
Sheriff Phil Summers said the pilot complained of chest pains and was taken by helicopter to Erlanger hospital in Chattanooga.
He was listed Saturday in serious but stable conditions and expected to be released Saturday night.
The FAA will secure the scene, along with a Hazmat team that will be in charge of any fuels that could have contaminated the area.
