Zmanda's CDP Solution Gives MySQL Database Administrators Instantaneous Point-in-Time Recovery for a Fraction of the Cost of Traditional CDP Offerings

ZmandaTM, Inc., the open source leader in backup and recovery software, today announced that its Zmanda Recovery Manager (ZRM) for MySQL - the first mission-critical backup and recovery solution designed specifically for MySQL databases - now delivers continuous data protection (CDP) to better support transactional MySQL database environments. Zmanda's innovative CDP functionality gives MySQL users the ability to continuously track database changes and recover instantly to any point in time, for a fraction of the cost of traditional CDP solutions. Zmanda also announced support for InnoDB® HotBackup, a utility used for online backup of InnoDB tables.

"MySQL databases are increasingly used by high volume, high transaction applications. These environments demand the highest level of data protection and the shortest data recovery window possible," said Chander Kant, Zmanda's CEO. "With the launch of ZRM 2.2 and its innovative CDP functionality, we are addressing the data protection needs of the most demanding MySQL applications, while ensuring our solution remains open, affordable and easy to use."

ZRM for MySQL is an open source, enterprise-class backup and recovery software designed to help MySQL database administrators (DBAs) prevent the serious damage caused by data loss in the event of human error and system or database failure. ZRM is designed specifically for MySQL databases and includes unique, enterprise-grade features such as MySQL storage engine and snapshot intelligence, replication support, and integration of backup operations with MySQL binary logs. The Enterprise Edition of ZRM comes with the Zmanda Management Console - a powerful Web-based graphical user interface that lets DBAs control backup and recovery across all MySQL servers from any browser enabled device.

ZRM's new CDP functionality leverages snapshot capability embedded in Linux LVM, Veritas VxFS, Windows VSS, Solaris ZFS and NetApp SnapManager. Deep integration between ZRM, underlying storage, and MySQL binary logs results in a highly efficient MySQL CDP solution with almost instantaneous point-in-time recovery. Using this approach, MySQL DBAs get the benefits of CDP without the expensive investments required by traditional CDP solutions which indiscriminately capture all writes to the database, effectively doubling the computing resources required.

With the introduction of CDP, MySQL DBAs now have access to a full suite of backup options. With ZRM 2.2, MySQL DBAs can:

- Easily schedule full, incremental, raw or logical backups
- Use snapshot technologies to perform hot backup
- Activate CDP to enable instantaneous point-in-time recovery
- Automatically optimize the backup method that best fits their environment

Moreover, ZRM's unified recovery mechanism provides the same recovery workflow for all other backup methods, such as logical and raw backups. This unified recovery even works with third party data extraction utilities for MySQL, such as InnoDB HotBackup.

Zmanda also announced today that it has included support for InnoDB HotBackup in ZRM for MySQL. With ZRM, InnoDB HotBackup users can enjoy additional functionalities such as incremental backup, point-in-time recovery, intelligent backup scheduling, automated backup retention policy, backup monitoring and backup reporting, all via an easy-to-use Web console.

Zmanda's CDP functionality and support for InnoDB HotBackup will be a part of ZRM for MySQL Version 2.2, which is available immediately. For more information about ZRM for MySQL Version 2.2, please go to http://www.zmanda.com/zrm.
