Synopsis
For more than 10 years, online communities have been a growing presence on the Internet. Online communities are a way for people who have similar interests to get together and talk about their interests. Examples of this social networking are chat rooms, discussion forums, e-mail groups and weblogs (blogs).

Although this social networking continues to be popular, businesses have yet to take advantage of this collaborative tool and tap into the power of the Internet for employee communication. A website is simply looked upon as an electronic advertisement; but it has the power to be so much more. Most employees are already familiar with the Internet and how to use e-mail. Therefore, it is reasonable that a business’s website could effectively become a point of entry during a crisis when employees are displaced from the worksite. The crisis portal would be for employees only and require a password to enter.

This paper will discuss how to use a company’s website to create an online community that could be used for internal communication during a crisis when employees are at home or at a temporary work location.
