Synopsis

CEO's are faced with many challenges. One of the major challenges is "how to stay competitive while ensuring the security of the enterprise". Three spheres of concern emerge when assessing "security" and competitiveness.

Sphere of Influence: When your assets and capabilities can affect the courses of actions of others. CEO’s have the ability to affect the course of action not only of their organization but the entire "value chain" (vertical and horizontal business network) that the organization has touchpoints with.

Sphere of Interest: When the assets and capabilities of others can affect your courses of actions. A key goal should be to achieve vertical and horizontal integration internally and in conjunction with the complex networks that constitute the modern business organization including the influence of the "value chain" (customers, suppliers, stakeholders, etc.).

Sphere of Responsibility: The sphere of responsibility relates to strategy: mission, vision and values. In business the CEO of the company and ultimately the Board of Directors is responsible for actions taken and not taken. The complexity of business operations and the threat that a disruptive event will have a detrimental effect requires global resilience capabilities. Global resilience can be achieved through the application of "integrated" business continuity processes designed to enhance security while retaining a competitive advantage. We have created global reach via the evolution of transcontinental travel, Internet, communications media and worldwide business expansion. Our new global economy requires us to make business continuity a way of doing business not an adjunct to the business we are doing.
