Categories and Requirements of Membership

The BCI offers a wide range of memberships designed to enable people to join in the way that suits them best.

Statutory Membership

There are three grades of statutory membership; Fellow, Member and Specialist

Statutory members of the BCI have the right to vote in elections for Board Directors and on those issues which the Board may wish to put to the membership. They have the right to stand for election to the Board Fellows have the right to use the designatory letters FBCI, Members have the right to use the designatory letters MBCI, Specialists  have the right to use the designatory letters SBCI.

Non-Statutory Membership

There are four grades of Non-statutory membership; Companion, Associate, Affiliate and Student.

The Companion grade is open to managing directors, presidents, CEOs, senior directors and senior academics who wish to be associated with the BCI. Admittance to this grade is by invitation of the Board and on terms and conditions prescribed by the Board of Directors.

The Associates comprise persons who do not yet have the appropriate experience for Statutory Membership and any other persons or categories of persons who may be admitted to that grade by or on the authority of the Board. Associates have the right to use the designatory letters ABCI.

The Affiliates comprise persons who wish to be associated with the aims and objectives of the Institute and who are admitted to that grade on terms and conditions prescribed by the Board. This grade is open to members of other institutes and associations where both governing bodies have agreed that joint membership can be offered.

The Students comprise those persons who are undertaking a course of study, either full or part time, on a programme of any subject which leads to a qualification and who are admitted to the grade of Student on terms and conditions prescribed by the Board.

Honorary Membership

The Board of Directors may at its absolute discretion, and under terms and conditions which it will from time to time determine, admit as Honorary Fellows or Honorary Life Members persons who have rendered some outstanding service to the practice of Business Continuity Management or to the Institute.

They shall have all the rights of Statutory Members including voting rights and be subject to all obligations of Statutory Members except the payment of an annual subscription. The designatory letters FBCI (Hon) and MBCI (Hon) will apply to these grades.

THE NEW SPECIALIST GRADE

The BCI`s number one aim is to ``increase membership worldwide, reflecting the interests of complementary disciplines as they relate to BCM.`` To fulfil this strategic objective the Board has approved the creation of a new Specialist grade which will carry the designatory letters SBCI

Entry Requirements

At least 4 certification standards and ability to demonstrate a minimum of two years full time practical experience working in their chosen discipline together with evidence of a recognised qualification in their specialist field.  Two references will also be required. The Specialist Grade will carry full voting rights.

Potential SBCI`s who cannot meet the minimum criteria will be invited to become Associate (ABCI) Members.

Faculties

The BCI will develop faculties for the following specialist areas to which Specialist will be elected: Crisis and Emergency Management, Human Resources, Information Security, Insurance, Physical Protection and Security, Property and Facilities Management, PR and Media Management, Risk Management, Salvage and Restoration, Technology Recovery

This new grade provides recognition currently unavailable to many professionals working in our industry. To others, SBCI will merely be a stepping stone to achieving Member and perhaps ultimately Fellow status. To facilitate this, the CPD and mentoring schemes will provide support and assistance individuals in their development. This new grade will also provide evidence to organisations that their BCM requirements are being progressed by respective subject experts who are professionally certified by the BCI.
